Sahaja Yamalapalli from Hyderabad, India is the first women tennis player of Sam Houston State University, Hantsville, Texas at the 2019 Oracle ITA Masters where she played against some of the top collegiate players in the country in Malibu, California, USA.

“I am so excited to have been selected to compete in such a prestigious national collegiate tournament,” Yamalapalli said. “It is an honor to be able to represent Sam Houston State on a national stage. Thank you to my teammates, coaches and the rest of our Bearkat village for helping me achieve this honor.

“We are so proud of Sahaja,” head coach Rob Hubbard said. “She’s worked so hard and deserved to be noticed on the national scene.

After loosing In the main draw (Round 32) against 8th seed Anna Turati(Italy) of University of Texas with 2-6,0-6, Sahaja Yamalapalli bounced back with an excellent performance  in the consolation draw(Round 16)  and defeated conference USA Player of the Year Michaela Haet(AUS) of Rice University in straight sets 6-3,6-1.

.Yamalapalli defeated Anna Riedmiller(USA) of Denver  with 6-3, 6-1 in the Quarters of the consolation bracket on Saturday.

Sahaja then knocked off Brindtha Ramasamy(Canada) of Miami-Ohio University in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 in Semi finals and advanced to the finals.

In finals Sahaja faught well against Iuliia Bryzgalova(Russia) of University of Pennsylvania till the last point but failed in converting the match to lift the winner title and finally lost with 4-6,1-6.
